Fruit Bowl From Newspaper

Here’s an idea to use up an old newspaper. Make it into a fruit bowl. It took a while, but was surprisingly easy really. Thanks Ikchha for the YouTube instructions. Link below.

What you need

You will need an old newspaper, some Pritt stick, PCV glue, and a long thin stick. I also used a small clamp so I could put the bowl down before I was finished. And a real bowl with the approximate shape I was aiming for. For your first attempt try for a bowl that does not have steep sides.

Construction

I followed the video. A skewer was too short for me. Luckily I found one closer to 30 cm long.

The rolls of newspaper that I used for the bowl.

When the rolls of paper are all coiled, use a small clamp to stop it running, and glue the end. This is fiddly and I lost it a few times and had to start again.

Then carefully place the roll on an upturned bowl, and slowly worry the paper into the shape of the bowl. Top tip – when you get the shape, don’t pick it up to go and show someone.

Ever so carefully place the paper bowl inside the master bowl. When you’re happy that it’s the right shape, paint with watered down PVC glue. Give it a few hours to dry. Then again invert the bowl. Use it to hold the bowl and paint the outside.
